PERSONAL Mrs Magnay, who has been the guest of her sister, Mrs C. R. Honeyfield, at “Park Farm,” has returned to Hawera. Miss Anderson, North Auckland, is the guest of her brother, Mrs J. N. Anderson. Mrs J. R. Hunger is on holiday in Wellington. Mr L. W. Austin is in Wellington. Nurse P. Bates was entertained by her fellow nurses on Wednesday, at a farewell party at the nurses’, home, and a presentation was made to her, in view of her approaching marriage to Mr John Parsons. An interesting engagement to Patea is that of Una, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs S. Thomas, Brooklyn, to Jack Maxwell, youngest son o£ the late Mr and Mrs R. Julian, Patea. Mrs I. Honeyfield has returned from Rotorua.

A happy afternoon ceremony took place on Thursday, when district commissioner, Miss Lysaght, enrolled Brownies Alison Francis, Alison Jones, Esme Death, Jean Buccannan, Dorothy Old, Dorothy Davies, and Eunice Smith, the committee entertaining at afternoon tea after games had been enjoyed.

The large gathering in the Druids’ Hall last week, made a success of the gift afternoon, organised by the ladies of St. Patrick’s Church, for the Sisters of St. Joseph’s. There was a wonderful response, and the numerous gifts included linen and groceries. In the social part of the afternoon, items were given by Mrs Sumich and Miss Marie Egan, accompanied by Miss O’Sullivan, of Manutahi, and competitions were won by Mesdames Dick Hurley and Dan Hurley, junr. LADIES* GOLF CLUB Miss L. Carey defeated Mrs R. W. Haddow in the final of the junior championship on Wednesday, and

Miss O. Adams defeated Miss N. Hurley in the final of the Park Farm Cup. The ladies will be holding their closing day on Wednesday afternoon next, when a four-ball will be played and approaching and putting compe--1 titions. BOWLING PATEA v. OPUNAKE Four rinks from Opunake will visit Patea to-day to try conclusions with the local club. The rinks will be picked from the following:— Carey, White, Palmer, Oakley, Jones, Scown, W. F. Sheild, Dunkley, I Cox, W. White, Bell, McClymont, (Pearce, Sheahan, Richards, Ramsbotjtom, Edwards, P. Bourke, Hamerton, Hopkins, Paterson, Southcombe, A. Sheild, Wainwright. Players are requested to be on the green by 1.45 p.m. An extra rink will proceed to Waverley to take part in the opening day there. PATEA SURF CLUB ANNUAL MEETING Every possible effort is to be made to erect swimming baths in Patea, an ideal site near the river, with part of the concreting work already there, being suggested at the annual meeting of the Patea Surf and Life-Saving Club on Thursday. In view of the Minister of Health’s suggestion that every town should commemorate the centenary celebrations by the erection of baths, Mr Lamb thought the matter should be considered, as the town was steadiiy going ahead. Arrangements are to be made to instruct schoolchildren in swimming and life-saving. Weather conditions did not permit instruction to be given Ito the Waverley schools, but this year special to be made. The instructor, Mr Cuffle, was comjplimented on having been chosen as a judge at the South Taranaki Scout competitions to be held shortly in Patea. Appreciation was expressed to the secretary, Mr M. Boagey, for his work. A credit-balance of £8 16s was shown in the balance-sheet. Special efforts are to be made to obtain new I active members. The election of officers resulted: President, Mr G. Boagey presided at a meeting of the Patea Seaside improvement I Society on Wednesday when it was decided that the Borough Council be 1 asked that the pound-keeper pay strict attention to wandering cattle at the beach. The town clerk replied to a previous letter on the matter that the councillors had decided to i take no action, but suggested the trouble could be overcome if each resident fenced his section. The Methodist Tennis Club expressed thanks for the use of the scoop for laying down their court. As it is too late to plant trees at the beach, Messrs. Duncan and Davies’ offer of ngaio trees at 3d each will receive attention next autumn. Sub-leases were granted Messrs. F. W. Locker, J. Haworth, H. Peacocke, and H. Boagey, any three of the chairman, secretary, Messrs. L. P. Clarke, A. Dunkley, and E. O. Horner to sign the sub-leases. Messrs. A. Dunkley, J. Haworth and H. Peacocke were appointed to act with the other local bodies in the matter of the erosion at the beach. The Patea Mineral Water Company’s tender tor the sole right of holding an ice-cream and drink stall at the beach in the summer was accepted. Sheds will be open for bathers from October 31.

PATEA PLUNKET SOCIETY As the annual effort this year the Patea Plunket Society have decided to hold a garden party in their own grounds, and at Thursday’s committee meeting arrangements were discussed. The Borough Council is to be asked for permission to use the grounds. Mrs. Roberts was placed in charge of competitions with Mesdames Roots, J, Anderson, Bostock, Corbett, Austin. Mrs. L. Adams in charge of the produce stall, with Mesdames Pearce, Stevens, Smiles, Pettigrew, T. Anderson, Misses Pearce and Harris. Mrs. J. R. Hunger in charge of afternoon tea, with Mesdames Bates, Brooke-Taylor, Nelson, Mays, Whittington, and Macken. A lucky number baby competition will be held and a dancing display was suggested. A wheelbarrow race is to be held in

the town in the evening when it was decided to ask the band to play. A copper trail competition was suggested. Sympathy with the relatives of the late Miss Pattrick was passed. Remits for the conference at Wellington on November 4 and 5 were discussed and the delegates, Mesdames Haddow and Honeyfield, were instructed how to vote. Miss G. Tompkins, Plunket nurse, reported that: Patea babies on the books were 66, older children 77, at outstations 137, older children 104, total on books 384. New cases at Patea, 3 mothers and 3 babies; at outstations, 6 mothers and 6 babies. Days at Patea office, 7, at outstations, 15. Visits to Patea rooms, 265; to outstations, 316. Visits to Patea homes, 8 new, 21 old; outstation homes, 16 old and 5 new. Sales £lO 4s 4d. The health of mothers and babies was mostly good. Those present were: Mesdames R. W. Haddow (presiding), D.
