HUNTERVILLE

OBITUARY The death occurred at the Wanganui Hospital on Saturday last, after a brief illness, of Mr. Herbert Rawson, aged 69 years. The late Mr. Rawson arrived in New Zealand 50 years ago, 40 years being spent at Pukeroa. Always a willing helper and generous giver in any function, his kindly interest will be greatly missed. Mr. Rawson was chairman of the Pukeroa School for many years. He leaves a widow and grown-up family, Mr. Herbert Rawson (Waverley), Mrs. Binns (New Plymouth), Mrs. Brooks (Mangatainoka), Mrs. N. Nation and Mr. W. Rawson (Pukeroa). There are eight grandchildren. CRICKET A number of members of the club attended the nets on Wednesday afternoon, but found the wicket not yet suitable for practice and resorted to throwing the ball about for a short time. It will be difficult for members to obtain any satisfactory practice before the competition commences today week. It does not appear that the ground will be in satisfactory condition for play until after Xmas. GENERAL Hunterville has brightened considerably this year and in the last few months two new businesses have started and other established firms have improved their premises. Every house in town is occupied and still the demand for housing continues, while shops which were empty some time ago are now occupied. Two Neon lights have appeared and these brighten the town at night. Many people hoped the town would adopt a similar lighting system to that which Marton has on the late nightstreamers of coloured lights, etc.—but this is apparently not being done. Mr. E. H. Taylor, who for nearly six years has been headmaster at the local school, has received notice of his appointment to the position of headmaster at Lower Hutt School and leaves to take up duty next week.
