RHODES SCHOLAR RETURNS
A GOVERNMENT POSITION [ Per Press Association. ] AUCKLAND, Oct. 21. The New Zealand Rhodes Scholar, Rugby captain at Oxford University and liaison officer attached to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Mr. M. McG. Cooper, accompanied by his English wife, arrived by the Rangitiki from England. He is the first New Zealand Rhodes Scholar to join the New Zealand Government service. He will visit his people in Hawke’s Bay before commencing his duties at Wellington on Tuesday next.
In three seasons Mr. Cooper captained Oxford in 50 matches. He said that good forwards and fast enterprising backs are expected to join the British team for South Africa next season. The team should do exceptionally well.
He said that he had enjoyed every minute of his stay in England. He does not know how long he may be in New Zealand. He may be sent back to England in two years’ time.
