CROQUET

WANGANUI EAST CLUB OPENING OF SEASON ACTIVITIES COMMENCED Perfect weather conditions prevailed yesterday afternoon for the official opening of the Wanganui East Croquet Club’s 1937-38 season. There was a large number of members of kindred clubs present and an ejoyable afternoon was spent by the visitors. The president of the club, Mrs A. E. Halligan, extended a welcome to the visiting croquet players and thanked them for their kindly interest in the club. She expressed her thanks of the work done during the year by Messrs Burns, Cox and Halligan in improving the club’s grounds. Mrs A. Crawford, president of the Wanganui Croquet Association, congratulated the club on holding its official opening on such a fine day. All the clubs in Wanganui had been lucky this season so far as the weather was concerned. She congratulated the club on its achievements, which she said were wonderful for so small a membership. Additions had been made tu the club’s pavilion since last season the grounds improved, the work being carried out by voluntary labour. The work done by Mr A. E. Halligan and Mr Burns for the club was really marvellous. There were few men who would give up their spare time in this way to assist the sport of their wives and their friends.

For a small club, the Wanganui East Club had done marvellously well, both from the point of view of improvements and play. The club had held the Wedderspoon Cup throughout the season and had successfully staved off six challenges. A number of members of the club had also done well in the Wanganui champion ship tournament and their presence would be welcomed at future touranments.

After wishing the club every succes for the coming season, Mrs Crawford hit the first ball. The visitors were entertained at afternoon tea, after which a number of competitions were held.
