SHORTAGE OF NURSES
SERIOUS VIEW TAKEN POSITION IN WAIRARAPA [ Per Press Association. 1 MASTERTON, Oct. 20. A grave view was taken by members of the Wairarapa Hospital Board to-day of the acute shortage of probationer and trained nurses. The matron of the Masterton Hospital stated that in order to staff the institution adequately she was faced wih the alternative of stopping days off or postponing the annual leave of nurses. Recently two advertisements by the board for a maternity sister and a staff nurse failed to elicit a single reply. It was pointed out that the position was not peculiar to Wairarapa, but was general in New Zealand. Members considered that with the forty-hour week other walks of life were becoming much more attractive to girls than the nursing profession. In the near future the position would become even more acute, and it was stated that the board might have to consider closing down one ward.
