CHARGE OF ASSAULT
SEAMAN FINED STRUCK SHIP’S DOCTOR [ Per Press Association. ] WELLINGTON, Oct. 20. J. Harmer, a seaman, was charged before Magistrate Mosley to-day with assault and pleaded guilty. “He is probably the least culpable of the men who struck me,” said Dr. J. L. Barford, of the steamer Tainui. He evidently thought he was acting for his friend. Witness said that accused and another came to his cabin on Monday evening, both being under the influence of drink. Harmer disputed statements witness had made in a letter to the hospital authorities concerning a man who had been admitted from the ship. Later several drunken men used abusive language to witness, and accused struck him on the face. Accused went outside and two other men struck witness. Accused said he was not drunk but in a temper. He thought his friend had not had a fair go. The Magistrate: And you thought that striking the ship’s doctor would help your friend. A fine of £2 in default 14 days’ hard labour, was imposed.
