BANK-NOTE FORGER
FOUR YEARS’ HARD LABOUR [ Per Press Association. ] WELLINGTON, Oct. 19. Convicted in the Supreme Court today on two charges of forging Reserve Bank £5 notes, Charles Alfred Remmers Carpenter, a labourer, ageo 49, was sentenced by Mr Justice Reed to four years’ imprisonment with hard labour terms.
The Crown Prosecutor, Mr W. H. Cunningham, prosecuted and called 16 witnesses whose evidence concluded yesterday.
Accused conducted his own defence and addressed the jury for 40 minutes. He said all his actions were those of a man with innocent mind and intent assisting a friend in printing Christmas cards. 9 “You seem to have decided to follow a career of crime,” said His Honour. “What is worse, you led your son into it by getting him to assist you.”
