TEMPERANCE UNION

GONVILLE BRANCH The Gonville branch of the W.C.T.U. held its monthly meeting in the Methodist schoolroom on October 1. There was a good attendance and the president, Mrs Newton, opened proceedings with a hymn and Mrs T. Brown led in prayer. Mrs Beck led the devotions from Psalm 27, stressing the point that all have a torch to hold high and pass on that others may be helped and rough paths made smoother for little feet and weary ones that come after. A prayer session followed . for sisters in the troubled parts of the world. A collection was made for headquarters and Maori work. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed and a letter read from Mrs Ashworth, a former president. The convention report was read by Mrs Ogg. the outstanding features of which were the spiritual tone of the devotional services and Mrs Peryman’s talks of great interest to members of the union specialising the new membership campaign and the clearing of headquarter’s debt as a centenary memorial to pioneer members of the W.C.T.U. in New Zealand. Also the need for individual service in the work and commending the need to remember that “With God all things are possible.” Mrs Ogg was thanked for her very full report and several members spoke to it. Band of Hope matters were discussed with a view to Miss Appleby’s visit. Temperance facts were read by Mrs T. Brown and Mrs Beck. It was decided that the November meeting be a pay-up and the last meeting of the year. It was decided to ask the Rev. C. Brown to address the meeting for next month. Mrs T. Brown was afternoon tea hostess and Mrs Ogg gave a solo which fitted in well with the spirit of the meeting and was much appreciated by all. The meeting closed with the Benediction.
