EX-COUNCILLOR’S DEATH
LATE MR. C. W. POYNTER TRIBUTE TO HIS MEMORY A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr C. W. Poynter was passed at last night’s meeting of the Wanganui City Council on the motion of the Mayor, Mr W. J. Rogers. “The late Poynter gave valued service to his fellow citizens as a member of the Wanganui City Council for a period of fourteen years in all —firstly from 1907 to 1912, and again from 1922 to 1931,” said- Mr Rogers. “For two years, from 1925 to 1927, he was Deputy-Mayor, during Mr Hopeful Gibbons’ term of office as Mayor, and from time to time he acted as chairman of the Works, Gas, Reserves and Library Committees, respectively. It was my pleasure to be associated with the late Mr Poynter on this council for a period of four years—from 1927 tu 1931—and I bear testimony to his ability, sincerity and honesty of purpose in all his transactions.
“The late Mr Poynter has left behind him a splendid record of public service, and his memory is enshrined in the hearts of all who knew him. One writer has truly said—“ Nothing is swifter than the years,” but we know that the late ex-Councillor Poynter did not find them too swift to give many of his best years in the service of mankind.”
