TREITHAM TRACKS

WELLINGTON TRIALS THE FINAL PREPARATIONS YESTERDAY’S GALLOPS (Special to “Chronicle.”) WELLINGTON, Oct. 19. Conditions could not have becil moie ideal for galloping trials than they were at Trentham this morning, but not a great number of visitors are yet on the scene, owing to the proximity of the week-end fixtures to the Wellington meeting, and the fast work was not extensive, though it was interesting. The plough and the outside of the course proper were used, the going being fast on the plough and a trifle dead after frost on the grass. The distances are correctly flagged on the course proper, so no allowances have to be made. A number of Wellington Handicap candidates were sent miles on the course proper, and Boomerang, Cerne Abbas, Cuddle, Small Boy and ArcticKing all did their work attractively. On the plough Sunee ran a brilliant half-mile. None of the two-year-olds appeared fully extended in their short sprints. Boomerang is Well The best of the mile trials was probably that of. Boomerang (A. Bennet) and Cerne Abbas (G. Elliott), who ran the distance in lmin. 40 3-5 sec., the halves in 50sec. and 50 3-5 sec. respectively. Both were going along well at the close, Boomerang just shading the mare. Cuddle (W. Doyle) and Small Boy (J. Forsyth) occupied lmin. 41 l-sscc., the halves in 49 4-ssec. and 51 2-ssec. respectively, and Cuddle was a neck in front and doing it comfortably within herself, as also for that matter was her mate. Cuddle has taken not the least harm from her Masterton race, in which she was not required tc give more than she was willing without undue pressure, and her connections are perfectly satisfied with her progress. She will be ridden either by L. J. Ellis or L. G. Morris on Thursday. Small Boy is obviously very fit, but his trainer, I. Tinsley, says he might not be started at the meeting, as it is hoped to win the New Zealand Cup with him. If he runs H. N. Wiggins will probably have the mount.

When Arctic King (S. Wilson), Shy (J. Forsyth), Might (S. R. Farland), Hunting Cat (H. J. Callaghan), and Southern Blood (J. McCauley) went out to the mile post together one sensed a keen tussle, but the gallop was a little disappointing. After Shy had made most of the running, Arctic King came through effortlessly from the rear to beat Might by half a length, with Shy a length back, and the other pair handy. The time was lmin. 41 3-ssec., the first half in 49 3-ssec. and the last half in 52sec. Arctic King finished all over the others, but Might also ran on solidly, and Southern Blood did satisfactorily for a hurdler.

All the later galloping was done on the course proper. Fairy Dale (Farland) finished with the same dash as

she showed at Masterton to beat Rockingham (Wilson) by a couple of lengths over live furlongs in lmin. ssee„ the last half-mile in 50 3-ssec., but Rockingham was “star-gazing" in the straight. Myriam (Wilson) loped over the last'half-mile of a comfortable seven furlongs in 51 2-ssec. Parry (Wilson) was a leiutli in front of Hamarin (CaDaglujjl after taking 52 3-ssec. for Siegmund (Burgess) caught, (mil remained with Mother-in-L?->v (McCauley) over the closing stage of six furlongs in lmin. 21sec., the last half-mile in 52 3-ssec. Raroa (Wilson), though racing below expectations at Mastertoil, showed her usual track pace in slipping over half a mile in 49 3-ssec. Sunee on the Plough The first horses to work used the plough, and Sunee (L. T. Nesbitt), in beating Good Sun (R. Kitchen) by a length and a half over four furlongs in 49sec., set a main for the morning was not bettered. Sunee’s effort was probably his best yet this term, which indicates that he has been further benefited by his winning performance at Masterton on Saturday. Good. Sun, though beaten, was not at all disgraced, and he is on the upgrade with distinct prospects of securing a win in the near future. Koxal Chief (Elliott) and Debham (R. A. Dobson) went six furlongs, taking lmin. 16 3-ssec. for the distance and 51scc. for the last halfmile. Debham was a shade better in the home run, but there was not much in it.

Tidewaiter (G. R. Tattersail) was half a length in front of Stargono (J. Chaplin) after running the last halfmile of live furlongs in 49 3-ssec. Sigurd (Dobson) took lmin. 34sec. for seven furlongs, the last half-mile in 53 2-ssec. l.ustral (Burgess) ami Matoru (Dobson) occupied lmin. 50 sec. for a mile, coming home the last half in 54sec.

Several two-year-olds came down the straight from the half-mile barrier, but timing is impracticable on this track from the centre of the course, and in any case most of the youngsters were only being exercised for experience. Diareus, Beauly, and Twenty Grand were together ahead of War Cloud at the end of their spurt. Peerless was going nicely just in front of Protector, who had waited for her early. Rakaranga, with Black Thread, was never out of a canter.

Red Sun (E. Burgess) was schooled over four fences, giving his usual faultless exhibition. Polabian (D. W. Bush) went over the same obstacles, and it was probably his best school to date. Blue Tiger (C. McGovern) twice came down over the two fences away from the sun, jumping soundly.

Other visiting horses not on the tracks were Brunhild, Taro, Geira, Le Toquet, Ohanga, Ngatirahiri, Ben Braggie, Tiger Gain, Journet, Anubis, Surmount and Soho, the last-named particularly impressing as looking a very lit horse. Trentham Totalisator Arrangements have been made on the totalisator at Trentham to improve the pay-out facilities and the club anticipates no further trouble in this direction. All the late dividend windows on the lawn have been transferred from the main house to the kiosk, and two of these four windows will be open continuously. A further improvement will be the display on the notice board above the commission house of alt the placed horses during the day, with corresponding dividends.
