SALES TAX YIELD
EXPANSION IN AUGUST RECORD FIGURE APPROACHED Sales tax yielded £301,002 in August. This amount is the second highest total on record and is only £8794 below the record ligure established in May. In comparison with the amount collected in July the August yield is £22,034 higher, an increase of 7.9 per cent. The following tables compares the collections for the eight months of the past two calendar years:—
The results from the tax in recent months reflect the consistently greater volume of wholesale and retail business in comparison with the same period of last year. For the eight months of the current year to the end of August sales tax receipts have contributed £2,253,634 to the revenue of the country, as compared with £1,820,075 during the same period of 1936. For the corresponding months of 1935 £1,522,324 was collected, as against £1,341,592 for that period of 1934.
