MAJESTIC THEATRE

“THE GOOD EARTH.” One of the most films of recent times is "The Good Earth,” which is continuing its very successful season at the Majestic Theatre. The film is one which should be seen, not only because of the excellent photography and the dramatic quali- i ties of the famine and locust scenes, but because of the lesson told in the I magnificent acting of Luise Rainer. , Paul Muni, as Wang, the farmer, portray.-' excellently the varying re- I actions of man to extreme poverty 1 and wealth—the human fallibility of man as c< rtrasted with the rocklike constancy of his humble wife. Walter Connolly, ' nly Losh, Charles Grapewin, and Jessie Ralph also play prominent parts, and there are many hundreds of Chinese in the cast. The story tells of the marriage of Wang to the slave girl O-Lan, the rise of Wang to be the owner of five fields, the desperate struggle in the famine, the retreat southward, and revolution. Wang and his family return tu the land. I’losperily again returns, but brings with it a second wife for Wang. The clouds of locus’s sweep down on the unprotected fields, but the gods are kind. There is an excellent supporting programme, which commences at 7.45 p.m. at the evening sessions.

Deanna Durbin Again. Deanna Durbin, who charmed cinemagoers with her first screen appearance in "Three Smart Girls,” has distinguished company for her second starring film, "100 Men and a Girl,” commencing on Saturday at the Majestic Theatre. In addition to Adolphe Menjou and Alice Brady, two of the screen’s best character performers, the film presents the entire Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra and its world-renowned conductor, Leopold Stokowsky. As a concession to popular taste, the little star will sing a "hit” song written especially for the film, "It’s Raining Sunbeams.”
