CHINESE REFUGEES

NEW ZEALAND ASSISTANCE PLANS TO RAISE FUNDS [ Per Press Association. ] WELLINGTON, Oct. 18. A public meeting of citizens and members of interested organisations was called by the Mayor of Wellington, Mr. Hislop, to-day, to discuss ways and means of raising money to assist refugees suffering through the present conflict in China. The meeting decided to go ahead raising funds, work in with the Red Cross Society and Order of St. John which have already launched an appeal, and to leave the distribution of the money to the Red Cross Society.

A special Chinese appeal committee set up by the council of the Order of St. John and the Red Cross Society, with Sir James Elliot as chairman of the committee, aims to raise £lo,ooo] in a month with the co-operation of other organisations. Mrs. T. H. Lowry has made a donation of a number of special stamps which will be sold to motorists. In order to defray initial expenses, Mrs. Lowry has given £2O and Sir James Elliot £lO to the fund.
