ATTACKS IN INDIES
JAPANESE FISHING BOATS MACHINE-GUNNED BY ’PLANES NETHERLANDS ASKED FOR EXPLANATION (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) Received Oct. 18, 11.30 p.m. TOKIO, Oct. 17. The Foreign Minister, Mr Kawai, said that an official explanation was being demanded from the Netherlands Government of incidents in the Dutch Indies, where warplanes ma-chine-gunned Japanese fishing boats. Japanese consular reports showed that while off Sumatra on September 30 a ’plane from the warship Flores riddled the Tokuei Martino with 700 bullets, killing two and wounding two. A suspicion that the vessel was poaching was found groundless and it was released on October 9. The next Incident occurred off the Natuma Archipelago on October 9, when a ’plane machine-gunned Talshin Maru, wounding two. Such action was unwarranted because the vessel was only getting water. However, it is still detained.
