NEW PLYMOUTH TRACKS

WAVERLEY C ANDIDATES. ATTRACTIVE WORK. The weather was fine and the tracks fast for galloping at New Plymouth on Saturday morning, writes "Childers” in the Taranaki Herald. The outside of the course proper was available but most of the work was done on the plough. Autosweep and the two-year-old Windsor Chief were the only ones to gallop on the outside. Autosweep covered a mile in 1.45 1-5, hitting out freely. It was a useful effort but he is causing his owner-trainer, Mr. L. Butler, some concern because of his tendency to go down on his heels. Provided he comes through his work satisfactorily in the next few days he will be taken to Trentham.

Windsor Chief is a fine looking colt by Captain Bunsby from Crubeen, and is to run in the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham. He ran half a mile in 54sec. but went rather greenly. On the plough Script surprised bycovering seven furlongs in 1.311-5, after going fast to run the first halfmile in 50 3-ssec. It was his best effort on the tracks recently. Even Money covered half a mile in 52isec. Bantry and Shangrl La were on terms a length and a-half in front of Captain Tudor over five furlongs in 1.5, but none of the trio was kicked out. Both Bantry and Captain Tudor are coming to hand in good style. Booklaw and Don Erma completed a round by running the last five furlongs in 1.6 4-5. Both Bonny Glow and Lady Kyra were going comfortably throughout half a mile in 53 2-ssec. Lady Kyra especially had a lot in reserve and was pulling very hard. Tahurangi went a round at working gallop pace, the last six furlongs in 1.25 L Winsome Lu ran away from Dancing Lady over the concluding stages of five furlongs in 1.2 3-5 to finish several lengths in front. The pair actually went six furlongs but began very slowly. It was a smart gallop and Winsome Lu pleased, although Dancing Lady is not a very genuine track worker.

ON HAWERA TRACKS SATURDAY’S TRIALS. LORD CAVENDISH IMPRESSES. Ti’ack work at Hawera on Saturday morning was extremely interesting, there being a good deal of galloping by Waverley and Trentham candidates, states the Taranaki Herald. Both the outside of the course proper and the plough were available. On the plough Narrator shaded Regain over half-a-mile in 51s. The latter is making splendid progress. Le Marquis covered half-a-mile in 51 alone and for a similar task Student Prince occupied 52. Student Prince looks none the worse for his northern trip and was going nicely throughout. Gold Glare occupied 1.91-5 for five furlongs without being bustled. Swift and Sure covered a mile in 1.474, the last half-mile in 51, it being quite a satisfactory effort for a hurdler. Lickem was going comfortably alongside of Naughty Marietta over live furlongs in 1.4 4-5. Lickem worked pleasingly. Lowenberg and Friesland both came home strongly in the concluding stages of six furlongs in 1.18. It is probable that Friesland will be raced at Waverley in preference to Trentham. The Wellesley Stakes candidate Lord Cavendish was responsible for an impressive trial when he stood up three lengths start to Ruling Star over half a mile on the outside of the course proper, but finished practically on terms with his companion in 51. It was a good gallop and the Beau Pere—Lady Cavendish colt looks above the average. From a barrier start Reo Ra ran half a mile in 56 4-5. RICCARTON TRACKS WILD CHASE WELL SOUTH ISLAND VISITORS CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 18. Although most of the track work done at Riccarton this morning was easy pacing, some of the horses booked for Trentham provided interesting variety. The team of H. and A. Cutts went on the plough. Wild Chase reeled off a good mile, Great Memory accompanying him for the first five furlongs. Night Dress and Lazybones were mates in a useful seven furlongs. Paper Slipper dashed over five furlongs, and Mulatto was caccompanied by Great Bramble over the same ground. Guinea Fowl sprinted half a mile, and the two-year-old Godfrey went freely over three furlongs. With the exception of Great Memory and Great Bramble, these horses are engaged at Trentham, and H. Cutts will take them north to-morrow night. Argentic ran a smart mile on the trial grass, Screamer accompanying him over the last six furlongs. They will leave for Trentham to-morrow.

Miracle, who was restricted to easy work, will go north to-night. Redolent gave a good showing ovet two hurdles. Se will be shipped north to-morrow. Grey Honour was allowed to stride out over five furlongs. He will go north to-morrow with Kinnoull and Rebel Lad. F. Shaw gave Araboa and Ortyx light work, having brought them on from Washdyke on Saturday night. He will leave for Trentham to-mor-row. Three other southern horses to race at Trentham— Silver Streak. Queen of Song, .and Top Row-_will go north to-night. Silver Sight, Dropped Catch, Great Baby and Wild Career are not being sent north. Chaste is doubtful, as she hit one of her knees in Saturdays hurdles at Washdyke.
