HUNTERVILLE

SWIMMING CLUB ANNUAL MEETING The annual general meeting of the Hunterville Swimming Club was held in the Town Hall on Thursday night, Mr R. M. S. Jones presiding. The attendance was not large. The annual report stated: The baths officially opened early in the year, were completed long before the season ended. The club is indebted to Mr T. A. Duncan, Mr R. A. Gordon and many others, who nave helped to finalise the very modern equipment now installed. Wc have every facility for running the best of daylight events as well as evening programmes. During the season two general and three committee meetings were held, the most pleasing feature of which was the regular attendance of members. Your club has to thank the Wanganui Centre for the valuable assistance it has so willingly given at all times, and in particular for brining so keen a team of swimmers for the official opening and running the whole programme for us. We are also indebted to the centre for refunding this season's fees. So far as swimming was concerned the season was unfortunate. The prolonged epidemic of infantile paralysis, coupled with the unseasonable weather, made any pretence of carnivals or organised swimming events impracticable. The extensive campign for the “Learn-to-Swim” Week had to be abandoned, but a similar week will, health and weather conditions permitting, be held if possible in December of this year. While most members have paid their subscriptions (which are 5s for men, 3s 6d for ladies and 6 d for children), there are still a number outstanding, and your committee feels that it has only to mention the fact to ensure that those who have overlooked payment will make themselves financial forthwith. While the financial position is sound, your committee feels that it would be wise to husband its resources so that the upkeep of the baths may be adequately provided for and so avoid any demand on the Domain Board. Rules for the club were drawn up and your committee respectfully urges that all members will abide by them implicitly. If any member has any constructive suggestions for the improvement of these rules your committee will be pleased to deal with them. In conclusion, your committee desires to express its satisfaction with the conditions of the water, the attractive appearance of the baths and the help it received from all sources during the season, and to all those who helped, we extend our sincere thanks. Your committee feels confident that given good weather and an absence of disease, the coming season will be a successful one. Election of Officers. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted: Patron, Mr T. A. Duncan; president, Mr J. Bull; vicepresidents, Messrs R. M. S. Jones and A. J. Petrie; captain, Mr R. J. Jamisson; vice-captain, Mr R. Nicholson, secretary, Air W. G. O’Brien; treasurer, Mr A. J. Perlies; committee, Misses P. Jones and M. Moir, and Messrs I. Lynch, J. E. Biggar and A. Chisholm; hon. auditor, Air D. R. Barford. The following were elected new members: Airs S. S. Powell, Miss B. Boswell, Messrs J. E. Biggar, W. Biggar, J. Boswell, Clayton, E. Irwin, and E. 11. Taylor.

Air Lynch gave notice of motion to rescind Rule 7 that racing officials be appointed by the committee and that these be appointed at the annual meeting. This was seconded by Mr Biggar. Air Lynch moved that the headmaster of the school, at all times, be a member of the committee. This was seconded by Air Jones and carried. The date for the opening day was left to the committee. A ALEDICTORY The Poukiore Hall was the scene of one of the largest gatherings seen in the district for many years on Friday night, when residents of that district, Hunterville and many other districts, gathered to bid farewell to two

popular yong men. The event took the form of a dance, and the floor was packed with couples who continued dancing until an early hour, to the music of the Hunterville Alidnight Revellers. The guests of the evening were Mr : Basil Dewar, who, after many years, leaves Pukiore to-day to commence duty as an aircraftsman in the New Zealand Air Force, and Air H. Earles who, after some time spent in the employ of Alessrs Franks and Smith, at Hunterville, leaves to take up a new position at Raetihi. Both guests were the recipients of

handsome parting gifts, and the best wishes of a large number of friends..
