WANGANUI TITLE

CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING PROVINCIAL TOURNAMENT SEMI-FINALISTS FOUND It,. I Several surprises were regisI tered at the Belmont links yesteri day, when the Wanganui provincial golf championship tourna- : ment was advanced to the semi--1 final stages under excellent weather condition. As a result of the first two rounds of match play two Seafield players go into the semi-finals this ‘Tnorning, R. U. Kitto eliminating B. M. Silk and M. Casey putting out A. K. Kitto in the second round. The other semi-finalists arc L. Cathro, last year’s winner, and N. H. Amon. One feature of yesterday’s play was the fact that in several of the competitions the players went as far as the 19th. green, and even further. In additon to the second round “marathon’’ staged by Silk and R. F. Kitto, in the championship, J. I. Macneil went to the 19th. to win from L. Craig in the first round of the Belmont Handicap, and then had to go to the 21st. to defeat S. Powdreil. The Balgownie Handicap first round found M. Meuli winning from F. G. Beaven at the 20th., and the same player went to the 19th. in the second round game to defeat A. F. A. Woollams. Three of these long-distance contests were provided in the Seaview Handicap, 11. H. Christie winning his first-round match with W. R. Fuller at the 20th, which green was also the scene of T. Howie's win from L. E. Bassett in the second round. D. H. Mackay went to the 21st. to eliminate 11. E. Fairey.

Silk was in great form in his morning round against J. Goss, and after winning 7 up and 6 to play he wont on to complete his round in the excellent score of 69. He was five under fours when he eliminated Goss, up to which stage the only fives that had appeared on his card were registered at the seventh, and ninth holes. Goss was playing good golf, but against Silk’s brillant display he could not contend. Here is Silk’s card:—

Out: 3 3 4 4 3 4 5 4 5—35 In: 242 4 4455 4—31 In the afternoon Silk could not maintain his form against R. F. Kitto, who won through his ability to extricate himself from dillicult situations, of which he had not a few confronting him. They halved the first three and then Kitto won the fourth, where he was on the green in two and sank a 10ft. putt. At the fifth Silk was short, down the bank, and Kitto exploded out of a bunker to leave himself a nice putt lor a three to Silk’s four. Kitto lost the next, where he duffed his drive and found the rough with his second, taking two to get out, only to run through to a bunker. Silk's par four was perfectly played. At the seventh Kitto rammed down a long putt for a birdie four to become 2 up again, and a birdie 3 at Quarries made him 3 up. They halved the next two but Silk reduced the leeway when he won the 12th., where Kitto had a putting lapse. The Sealicid player was bunkered at the short 12*h. and Silk was in the rough on the far side of the green. Silk chopped out too strongly but Kitto played a splendid shot to within sinking distance and Silk ran past. The next two were halved but Silk staged a great recovery, winning three in a row to square the match at the 17th, Kitto having trouble with his putter. Par fours were carded for the 18th., but <it the 19th. Kitto rammed down a 25ft putt for an eagle three, Silk’s chip from the near edge of the green overrunning a couple of feet. It was a p.reat battle over the final stages, and Kitto’s winning putt was loudly applauded by the gallery which had gal nered.

The Seafield champion, M. Casey, had two rather easy wins, though lie had a leeway to make up early in the first round match, being 2 down at the third, only to recover his form and win 4 up and 2. In the afternoon he was right on his game, his putting being superb, and he eventually won from the younger Kitto 6 and 5. L. Cathro was steadiness personified in his matches, and in the second round he accounted for F. C. Hutchison, 3 and 2. D. C. Collins had an easy win in the morning, but went under to N. 11. Amon narrowly in the second round.
