AVONDALE FIXTURE

SECOND SPRING MEETING PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY (Special to “Chronicle.”) AUCKLAND, Oct. 15. The Avondale Jockey Club will stage its second spring meeting tomorrow and Monday. The programme is purely a handicap one and the rather small stakes have been productive o£ restricted fields in some instances. Nevertheless, after the experiences of backers at both the recent Avondale and Auckland meetings, the drop in numbers should be appreciated by speculators, for they found the “going” very difficult. The course at Avondale is very fast at time of writing and unless rain falls will be hard. The totalisator will operate on the *w b-dividend system. One of the most interesting titbits for to-morro'.v is the appearance of Te Hero in his first outing in public. He is engaged in the Juvenile Handicap and when he participated in the two-year-old parade at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting at Ellerslie nearly two months ago hopes were entertained that he would measure up to the highest standard. The opposition he will meet at Avondale is only moderate. Most of those left in the principal flat race, the King George Handicap, have been raced recently and the form is well exposed. However, many horses are still on the improve, and that is what makes spring racing so difficult. Gallio, Jonathan, Kiltowyn, and Gay Rebel all have good chances, and the small field should be helpful to Con Fuoco and Tybalt. A preference is expressed for Jonathan, for it was on this course a month ago that he was narrowly beaten over the same distance.

Orate can go very fast, and on this course last autumn he defeated a smart field of sprinters. His second at Paeroa a fortnight ago, which was his first run since the autumn, indicated that he should be a lit horse to-morrow for the Members’ Handicap. Triune must also be considered to have excellent prospects. Tray Bit was not ready when he raced last Monday, but that outing should work wonders in his condition. Tosh was prominent for some distance in the sprints at Ellerslie, and his entry for Trentham indicates that he has been doing well at home. Bachelor King was relegated to fourth place in the last couple of strides by Trilliarch last Monday, and he appears to be the pick of the second half of the handicap unless Crooning gives practical evidence of her partiality for this course. The final vote must go to Triune, who has only 8.3 in this modest field. Form horses to-morrow are:— Trial Stakes.—Raepata, Erlick, BarRangitoto Hurdles—L'Allegro, Englishman, Simint. Juvenile Handicap. —Te Hero, Eastern Heir, Gay Hussar. King George Handicap.—Jonathan, Gallio, Kiltowyn. Spring Handicap. Rainier, Gay Egypt, Palustre. Members' Handicap.—Airam, Kilonsa. Paso Robles. MASTERTON MEETING

THE CONCLUDING DAY BRIEF REVIEW OF CARD. Judging by the acceptances received for the concluding day of the Masterton Racing Club’s meeting to-day, the fixture should prove successful and the totalisator turnover, with the Saturday holiday, should be appreciably larger than on Thursday. As the meeting also provides a good “lead” for the Trentham meeting next week, the form will prove interesting. One feature of the acceptance list is the presence of Cuddle in the C. F. Vallance Memorial Handicap, in which she will have the services of L. G. Morris in the saddle. Rain fell at Masterton on Thursday night, but it is reported that the weather has cleared so the track should be in great order. The following horses are likely to be well supported to-day:— Trial Stakes. —Happy Heels, Amoroso, Anubis. * Second Highweight.—Shy, Pladie, Trackman. r Macara Hack Handicap.—Son and Heir, Alunga, Diamond Cutter. SPRING RACING

CAULFIELD CUP TO-DAY TRENTHAM ACCEPTANCES The spring racing campaign in New Zealand will be advanced a further stage to-day, when there will be racing at Masterton, Avondale and Timaru. The Caulfield Cup will be decided to-day at the V.A.T.C. meeting at Caulfield. It ranks next to the Melbourne Cup in value. The acceptances for the first day of the Wellington Racing Club's spring meeting appear this morning and serve to indicate that some great racing may be expected. Acceptances for all events at the Waverley Racing Club’s Labour Day meeting are due to close at 8 o’clock on Monday night. The first event at the Waverley meeting on Labour Day is to be run at 12 noon and the intervals will be 45 minutes, with the concluding event at 4.30 p.m. The loudspeaker for a local broadcast description of the running of races will be used at the Waverley meeting, and a dividend indicator will be operated.

W. Rayner intends to leave for Trentham on Tuesday with his team for the Wellington meeting, but the indications are that it will not be as large a team as was originally intended. Rehearsal may not go through unless he has thrown off a dry cough which, though only a minor affliction, would not improve his Wellesley Stakes prospects. This may mean that Minga (also in the Wellesley Stakes) and Relative will comprise the team.

The dry cough appears to have affected several other horses, and as yet it is not certain that Amigo will make the trip, though Mr. L. G. Paul’s Beau Pete gelding slipped over half a mile in 53 2-ssec. on Thursday morning. If started he will be ridden by S. Edwards.

S. Edwards, the promising apprentice in H. Johnstone’s stable, has been engaged for all six flat races at Waverley on Labour Day. He will ride Amigo, Parakino and Royal Romance at Trentham next Thursday.

The success which was achieved by Mr. G. M. Currie’s filly Homily at Randwick last Saturday will be welcomed as a wonderful advertisement for New Zealand bloodstock, especially as later in the day another of Mr. Currie’s breeding in Courtcraft proved a winner. It is interesting to note that eight yearlings from Homage, dam of Homily and Courtcraft, realised 7585 guineas at auction. The leading quartet sold as follow: —Honour 2300, Heritage 1175, Courtesy 1500, Courtcraft 1200. G. R. Tattersall has been engaged to ride Corroboree, Lady Ina. Surmount and Raratonga at the Wellington meeting. Jockeys’ engagements for the Avondale meeting to-day have been announced as under: — C. G.
