OHINGAITI

CRICKET SUB-UNION ANNUAL MEETING HELD The annual meeting of the RangiCrua Cricket Union was held in the Otarnakapua School on Thursday night. Mr S. Ramsay presided over a good attendance of delegates who represented Rangiwahia, Ruahin®.. Mangarimu, Mangamako, and Ohingaiti Clubs. The chairman, in his address, spoke of the smooth working of the union. The representatives have acquitted themselves well and the games had been most enjoyable. The balance-sheet was presented by the secretary (Mr D. Ramsay) ana was favourably commented upon, a credit balance of £7 10s Id being in hand. Before the election of officers, the meeting was left open to discuss and test the feeling of the clubs with regard to the continuation of the asso(£3l~4s); bulk supply £332 (£283 16s (£llB ss); community lighting £34 5s 3d); trading £209 17s 2d (£204 10s3a) totalling £3711 13s lOd (£3628 9s 9d). The decrease shown for lighting £l3B 7s 7d) is due to the fact that gross charges were reduced from Is to 9d per unit from July 1, 1937. Meter rentals were abolished as from July 1. 1937, except when a consumer requires more than three meters. Councillor Lang commented on the very satisfactory position shown. Other councillors agreed that better times were responsible for the undoubted improvement. PUBLIC LIBRARY That the degenerate state of; Raetihi’s Public Library is a disgrace ! to the town was the opinion expressed i by Cr. Laing at the council meeting on Tuesday evening. “Surely some-’ thing should be done to bring it more in keeping with the town,” stated Cr. Laing. Cr. Sandford: Unless the ratepayers ask for it I would not support the idea.

Cr. Laing: I move that the Library Committee be asked to bring down a report for the next meeting. Cr. Goodman stated that the late Mr. Harris had gone very thoroughly into the matter and had reported that there appeared to be very little public interest taken in the library. Cr. Goodman thought there was little use in any further endeavour to stimulate interest.

Cr. Sandford gave the opinion that as there were already two shopkeepers running libraries in the town and giving good service, there was no necessity for a public library. The Mayer stated that many people used the post and obtained books from outside sources. Perhaps arrangements could be made with Wanganui for a frequent change. Cr. Shout suggested selling the present books and replenishing with new books.

Cr. Ciochetto: It would be interesting to know how much time the young people had for reading. Cr. Laing: You will never get membership if the library is hidden away in the council room. I myself was unaware of its existence until someone told me about it. The lack of a proper library is one of the outstanding features of this town. Surely the majority of the people in Raetihi would appreciate a good library. Cr. Laing's motion lapsed for the want of a seconder. ciation. After a spirited discussion a

motion “That the union continue tu exist,” was defeated on a show of hands.

Mr D. Ramsay, as a suggestion from his club, asked that the money held by the union be divided among the clubs, pro rata to amounts paid in by them to the union. This was put in the form of a motion and carried.

The championship cup, now held by the Ruahine Club, subject to the donor’s permission, is to remain as a challenge cup, the clubs to play friendly challenge matches for the cup, which is to be won on the day's play, the rules to decide the challenge matches to remain the same, i.e.. those set down by the union. In choosing a team to play clubs of the calibre of Taihape or Feilding, u was agreed that the respective captains, by mutual consent, pick a suitable team. It is hoped that friendly game* with neighbouring clubs will do mucn to foster the game in the district and that cricket will prove to be a game to be enjoyed to the full. PERSONAL Mr and Mrs Pearson and family, of Ngarawahia, are staying with Mr A. Jamieson.
