BOWLING

RAPANUI CLUB THE SEASON OPENED YESTERDAY'S HAPPY FUNCTION In its picturesque surroundings, but a step from the croon of at Kai Iwi beach, the Rapanui bowling green, despite th? bleakness of yesterday’s wind, was a scene of warmth and jollification to celebrate the opening of a new season. There are few clubs ol a like nature which so enter into the spirit of the first day of the year as Rapanui does. A strong representation of ladies has much to do with the success of the day.

Mr. E. P. V. Sealy, club president, welcoming the visitors and calling on Mrs. Alf Handley to play the first “kitty,” said that the hospitality of the ladies at Rapanui was far-famed. The green was in splendid condition and Mr. Bill Low (green superintendent) and his greensman were deserving of commendation on that account. “This club is most fortunate in having an extremely loyal group of members,” Mr. Sealy proceeded, “and one family name, that of Handley, should be inscribed in letters of gold.” With his characteristic sense of humour, Mr. Sealy proceeded to thank those who worked in the club’s interests, particularly the club secretary, Mr. Bert Willis, recalling that last year he (Mr. Sealy) had had occasion to refer to the pavilion as being like a flapper’s dress, something without a back to it. Some little time ago when he had arrived he had found Mr. Willis and others painting the inside. The speaker had not considered it necessary to criticise the quality of the work, but the quality of the paint, which he said could be likened to another flimsy garment worn by flappers, it was so scanty. Mr. Willis, the speaker said, in his capacity as secretary, was the club, his organisation of social and other functions being greatly appreciated. Mr. A. Crawford, president of the Wanganui Bowling Centre, replied on behalf of the visitors, and said that such was the welcome always extended at Rapanui that it made those who participated wish that there was an opening day once a fortnight. The green played splendidly for an opening of the season, and was commended by all who played. Following are the results of the games played:— O’Reilly, Hemingway, W. Morrison, Clinkard 12, v.
