LAWN TENNIS

WANGANUI ASSOCIATION REVIEW OF FAST YEAR Following is the annual report of the Wan. uiui Lawn Tennis Association, to be presented to the annual meeting on Monday night:— “Membership—During the season the St. Andrew’s Club, Marton, affiliated with the association. The membership of several clubs shows a slight decrease, the number of affiliated players being approximately 1130. The Taihape Club, with a member ship of 99, has the honour of having the largest membership. “Finances. —The financial position of the association has again been the cause of much concern to your committee, and it is quite evident that retrenchment wherever possible must special attention during the * coming season. “Annual Touranment. Your association’s annual tournament was held on the Wanganui Club's courts on January 1 and following days. The weather was the worst experienced at a tournament in the history of the association, having a serious effect on the attendance which, together with the lack of support from local players, caused the fixture to be unsuccessful financially. To the ladies who undertook the catering arrangements, etc., and to those gentlemen who assisted at the tournament, your committee tenders its sincere thanks. The principal events resulted as follows: Men’s championship singles. J. J. McCarthy; women’s championship

singles, Miss E. Plummer; men's championship doubles, A. and E. Dickie; women’s championship doubles, Miss E. Plummer and Mrs. C. Evans combined championship doubles, M. L. Lampe and Miss E. Plummer. “Junior Tennis.—Your association has continued its policy of providing free coaching to pupils of schools and Y it is considered that the retention of k the services of Mr. A. N. Campbell was justified. Unfortunately the annual tournament had to be postponed and is now scheduled to take place this month. “Residential Championships.—From 1 good entry, excepting in the women’s events, the winners of the different events were as follows: Men’s singles, H. T. Cox; women’s singles, Miss M. Purcell; men's doubles, H. Cox and L. W. Udy; women's doubles, Misses Mary and Margaret Purcell; combined doubles, H. Cox and Miss T. Greaves; men’s B grade singles, H. Armstrong. "Inter - Association Matches. Matches played during the season reAilted as follows: —Against Taranaki Rawera), won by 15 matches to 9; against Hawke’s Bay (at Wanganui) won by 14 matches to 10; against Manawatu (at Palmerston North), lost 8 matches to 16. The following players participated in the various matches: —K. Cavaye, H. T. Cox, J. Foster, N. Gordon, N. Hay Campbell, M. L. Lampe, T. Latham, V. Latham, M. Rountree, L. Smaller, L. W. Udy, Miss T. Cox, Mrs. J. Dempsey, Mrs. C. V. Evans, Miss I. Glover, Miss T. Miss M. Purcell, Miss Margaret Purcell and Miss Sutcliffe. “Inter-Club Matches. Matches were played in three grades; teams being of four men and four women;

the entries including teams from several country clubs were A grade 4, B grade 6, C grade 10. The winners being:—A grade, Wanganui No. 1; B grade, St. John’s; C grade, Raetihi. “Ranking Matches. Ranking matches were played in accordance with the scheme aproved of at the last annual meeting of delegates and although handicapped by the unseasonable conditions that prevailed, your committee is of the opinion that for the first year of its being in operation results justified the change over from the old system of ladder matches and from every point of view was an undoubted success.

“The sole selector, Mr. N. B. Barkman ,has ranked players as follows: Men. 1. Cox. 2. Udy. »—Hay Campbell. ♦ —Cavaye. s.—Lampe. 6—T. Latham. 7. —V. Latham. 8. —Foster. 9. —Smaller. 10. —Gordon. 11. O’Toole. 12. —Tippens. 13. —McFarlane. 14. —Rountree. 15. —J. Finlayson. 16. —Hutchison. Women. 1. —Miss Mary Purcell. 2. —Miss Greaves. 3. —Miss Margaret Purcell. 4. —Mrs. Evans. 5. —Miss Cox. 6. —Mrs. Dempsey. 7. —Miss Sutcliffe. 8. —Miss Glover. I;.—Miss Jack. 10.—Mrs. Richardson. “Ranked evenly. Not ranked owing to insufficient performances: D. W. Earle and Mrs. Thomson < Marton). “Town and Country Clubs.—At the last annual meeting delegates approved of a scheme formulated by Mr. G. P. Williamson, having for its object the closer connection between city clubs and those in the outlying portions of the associations district. As a result visits between certain town and country clubs were arranged and it is hoped that during the coming season unforseen difficulties that arose last year will be overcome and that the scheme will continue to take a more important part in club activities. “Thanks.—The thanks of the association are tendered to the Wanganui Lawn Tennis Club for the manner in which they have placed their courts at the disposal of the association during the season; and to the Wanganui East Lawn Tennis Club for the use of their courts. It is desired to place on record appreciation of the assistance of the Press in forwarding the interests of the game during the season. It is hoped that all affiliated clubs will experience a prosperous and successful season.”
