MT. STEWART MEMORIAL
CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS (From our own correspondent.) SANSON Oct. 13. At yesterday's meeting of the Manawatu County Council, Cr. J. H. Perrett reported on the recent meeting in Wellington of the Centennial Celebrations Committee. He stated that at the outset proposals were advanced for he construction of tracks up the ranges as a fitting commemoration of the event. He did not agree with that idea at all and the meeting then proceeded to consider more representative memorials. The Mayor of Wellington had suggested that there be a memorial to Edward Gibbon Wakefield on Mt. Victoria and one on Petone Beach to commemorate the landing of the first settlers at Port Nicholson. In addition the proposal for a district memorial in the Manawatu at Mt. Stewart was put forward and the meeting supported the three schemes. It was now up to the district to put forward its proposals as to the form the memorial on Mt. Stewart would take. He hoped that those qualified to do so would be prepared to submit designs to enable the district committee to finalise on a definite scheme to commemorate the pioneers of the district. Although the speaker was not impressed by the attendance at the meeting the results of the deliberations were very satisfactory.
It was agreed to hold a meeting of the Mt. Stewart pioneers’ memorial committee on Tuesday, October 26, at Sanson.
