HOSPITAL BOARD INCIDENT SUPERINTENDENT’S WORD QUERIED WAIHI, Oct. 13. Sharp exchanges took place between a member of the hospital board and the medical superintendent, Dr. A. Jenkins, at a meeting of the board last evening during discussion on an application by a female ex-patient for cancellation of her account amounting to £BO. The woman alleged that she was not satisfied with the result of the treatment she received. Dr. Jenkins said the woman was in a satisfactory state of health when she left the hospital and made no complaints. A member said it was strange the woman had made no complaint until she received her account some two months after leaving the institution, and also that the complaint was not accompanied by a doctor’s certificate. Mr. J. McDermott (to Dr. Jenkins): I would just as soon believe her as you, Dr. Jenkins. I have to come to Waihi to get insults from a member of the board. Mr. McDermott (to the chairman, Mr. F. Ward): If he’s got you bluffed he hasn't got me. The Chairman: You must withdraw that remark. Mr. McDermott said he would withdraw the words. A resolution was carried to the effect that the board considered the treatment of the woman in the institution was satisfactory. In response to a communication from the matron. Miss I. Paddock, asking for the reason for her dismissal, the board decided to reply that her services had been dispensed with on the ground of incompetency. The board agreed to grant her one month’s notice of dismissal.
