RAETnn CATTLE FAIR Messrs. Freeman R. Jackson and Co., Ltd., report as follows on their annual spring cattle fair held at Raetihi on Tuesday last. To a large attendance, including many visitors from Waverley, Wanganui, Feilding, Taumarunui and all adjacent districts, we offered 1200 head of cattle and 400 hoggets. The bulk of the cattle offering comprised young steers and these met with ready sale at prices very firm on those ruling at recent down-country sales. The Morikau Station yearling steers came forward in good order and elicited their usual keen enquiry, the top pen of 100 realising £7 14s, with an average of £7 5s 4d for the whole entry of 178 on their account. Messrs. Glenn Bros., of Kakatahi, topped the bullock section with an average of £lO 14s 6d for their line of 79, the top pen of 62 being purchased by a Taihape client at £lO 17s 6d. In the female fattening section there was spirited competition, Mr. J. R. Hunter obtaining £7 for a pen of 40 P.A. cross cows and heifers and £6 4s for a pen of 37 S.H. his yearling P.A. steers making £6 17s’. Fat cattle of all descriptions were in demand, £l3 being paid for light fat bullocks and up to £ll 10s for cows and heifers. Hoggets barely sustained prices obtained at some of our local earlier sales but the quality was not good, up to 28s being paid for wether hoggets and 33s 3d for ewe hoggets. Altogether we report a very satisfactory sale at prices in vendors’ favour.
