CITY MILK SUPPLY
PLAN FOR CHRISTCHURCH MR. R. E. HERRON'S REPORT. [ Ter Press Association. ] CHRISTCHURCH. Oct. 11. The establishment of an industry in Christchurch under the ownership and control of the Christchurch City Council is recommended by the manager of the Wellington City Council milk department L\lr. R. E. Herron) in a report that was tabled at a meeting of the council to-night. Mr. Herron, who investigated the milk industry in the city last May, considers that the industry is in a most chaotic condition with the producers and vendors unable to ensure a reasonable return lor their work or to give a supply of the necessary quality and hygiene. Pasteurisation of milk is favoured by Mr. Herron. If it should be necessary to make available a supply of raw milk he considers that it should be of certified quality only, but this would be more expensive than pasteurised milk.
On the basis of a return to producers of 8.268 d a gallon in summer and 13.603 d a gallon in winter, Mr. Pierron, suggests the sale of bottled pasteurised milk for the six summer months at sid a quart and for the six winter months at 6d a quart. The capital required to establish a municipally owned and controlled undertaking, exclusive of the amount needed for meeting compensation, would be about £220,000.
