WELLINGTON BOUT WOODS BEATS MARSHALL DISPLAY LIKE PRIZE RING. [ Per Press /association. ] WELLINGTON, Oct. 11. Trading willing elbow jolts in a stand-up battle, Joe Woods and Floyd Marshall gave a display at the Town Hall, Wellington, to-night, rather reminiscent of the prize ring than of orthodox wrestling technique. Woods won by two falls to one. Marshall, in the third round, took an absurdly easy fall from Woods with a flying body scissors. Woods reciprocated in the fifth when he saved himself from being dumped by striking Marshall a smart rap in the stomach, after which he dumped Marshall instead. Finally in the sixth round, after four and a-half hectic minutes’ belabouring one another with jolts, the wrestlers paused for a second, both half dazed. Woods let fly a blow that sent Marshall to the mat, where he pinned him. Marshall complained that the blow was a punch and the referee had to come to grips with Marshall while the attendants restrained W’oods, or the bout would have unofficially continued after the decision had been given.
OCTOPUS CLAMP FRENCHMAN'S ENDURANCE BLOMFIELD WINS ON POINTS [ Per Press Association. 1 AUCKLAND, Oct. 11. Trapped in “Lofty” Blomfield’s deadly octopus clamp for the greater part of the eighth round of the professional heavyweight wrestling contest at the Town Hall, the Frenchman Frances Fouche gave a splendid exhibition of endurance and refused to submit, but when the final gong sounded the referee awarded the New Zealander a points victory. Prior tc this each man had secured a fall in one of the finest bouts of the season, the exchanges from start to finish being replete with scientific wrestling and lively action.
