TOURING CRICKETERS

MATCH WITH WORCESTER STEADY BOWLING ATTACK ROBERTS THE BEST (From the Special Correspondent of the United Press Association.) WORCESTER, June 9. The consistent steadiness of the tourists’ bowling was a feature of the first day’s play in the cricket match between New Zealand and Worcestershire at Worcester. The wicket was the fastest experienced during the tour and the outfield also was fast, but the bowlers kept to their task with fine heart, the scoring rate being moderate. The New Zealand team is: Roberts, Vivian, Gallichan, Page, Moloney, Kerr, Weir, Lamason, Hadlee, Carson, and Lowry. Gallichan persistently pegged away, delivering 33 overs for only 55 runs before taking a wicket. Vivian was similarly inexpensive and was effective against the tail-end batsmen. Roberts’ reward for long periods of steady bowling might easily have been richer. Weir used the new ball with moderate cost and the constant prospect of success. The ground fielding was frequently applauded. A fine catch was made in the slips by Roberts and a good one at the boundary by Lamason. Worcester, which has beaten Derbyshire, Glamorgan and Warwickshire, topped 200 for the loss of only two wickets. Cooper, a 20-year-old recruit from the Lancashire League, played soundly and made a Sutcliffe-like century. Grimshaw, a former Yorkshireman, took four and a-half hours to score his century. The bowlers then enjoyed the supremacy till Horton and Buller added 70 to-gether in 40 minutes, the former hitting strongly and cleanly. The attendance was about 1200; a good crowd is expected on the second day. which is a half-holiday in Worcester. Details:—
