REPRIEVE FOR DOGS

The St. Bernard dogs which worried a girl were, by the acceptance of an offer of £7OO by Miss Amelie Augusta Lind-af-Hageby, saved from destruction. She proposes that the money be used to provide proper runs and accommodation for the dogs, saying that she is sure that if hygienic kennels are provided as in England there will be no danger of a recurrence of savageness. A message from London dated June 6 said that the Daily Herald's Geneva correspondent reported that because ten of the famous St. Bernard’s Hospice dogs worried a girl to death, their breeding would be discontinued and the dangerous ones destroyed as a result of an inquiry at which the girl’s father undertook to refrain from proceedings if .the above-mentioned remedy were adopted. The original St. Bernard strain is extinct, the present breed being Newfoundlands. The Augustine monks breed them In packs, which may account for their savageness.

Miss Lind - af •» Hageby, speaker and writer, was born in Sweden and came to England in 1878 and became a naturalised British subject in 1912. She was an active opponent of vivisection, a worker for the freedom of women and founded the International Federation of Anti-Vivisection and Animal-Protection Societies in 1909. In 1914 she established the Purple Red Cross Service with three hospitals for wounded war horses and authorised by the French Government. She conducted her own case in an action for libel against the Pall Mall Gazette. It lasted 16 days in April, 1913.
