SANDON

KING'S BIRTHDAY TOURNET On the evening of the King’s Birthday teams selected by the president and secretary played matches. In the A grade the secretary’s team secured a comfortable win by 24 games to 12 and the B grade match resulted in a draw. The evening proved a very successful and pleasant one. HINTS TO HOUSEWIVES COOKING BY ELECTRICITY A particularly interesting cooking demonstration was given at the Sandon Town Hall on Monday afternoon under the auspices of the Manawatu Oroua Electric-power Board and in co-operation with the Women’s Institute. Mrs Barrington, the demonstrator, immediately put herself on good terms with her audience of some fifty odd ladies, by announcing that she did not propose to try and teach the country women how to cook, but rather how to use to better advantage the power that was at hand, her advice coming from long years of experience of what had been the greatest help to the greatest number of people. She then proceeded to make scones (which she prefers to cook in a tin rather than on the oven slide), a sponge cake, puff pastry, caramel buns amongst other delicacies. As her capable fingers manipulated the various ingredients, Mrs Barrington had all sorts of useful hints to pass on about methods, exploding as fallacies many so-called hard and fast rules. Amongst other things she advised putting scones into a cool oven, also meat, and stressed the necessity for planning ahead to make the best use of every minute of Ihe range at high temperature and obviate the necessity for heating up twice. Even the best of the cooks present were a little envious of the toothsome dainties that were later handed round during the afternoon tea interlude and resolved to put into practice immediately the helpful information passed on. At the conclusion of the function. Mrs A. K. Drew expressed appreciation to Mrs Barrington for her splendid demonstration and assured her that many of those present had received many helpful hints. of the farmers by Mr. V. F. Toulmin, president of the union. A hearty vote of 1 hanks to the ladies for providing afternoon tea was carried by acclam ntion. RANGATIRA GOLF CLUB QUALIFYING ROUND FOP CHAMPIONSHIPS Mrs A. H.
