CASE AGAINST LICENSEE

BREACHES OF AWARD ALLEGED The licensee of the Aramoho Hotel, W. G. Johnstone, was proceeded against in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.H., for alleged breaches of an award in respect of a housemaid-waitress. Defendant was represented by Mr. B. C. Haggitt. Eva Raymond said she was engaged as housemaid-waitress for five weeks and received £1 12s 6d per week. After detailing the hours worked from 6.20 a.m., witness said that on leaving she applied for overtime to the wile oi defendant. She submitted a claim to defendant which had not been met. To Mr. Haggitt: She did not know why she was dismissed, although she inquired. There was a schedule ol hours pasted up in the kitchen but she did not work to them. She had never been told not to waste time. She denied that she never started work before 7 a.m. Her claim for overtime was made on the last day of her employment. She signed the wages book as having worked 40 hours per week. She made no claim for higher wages during the time she was employed ior doing laundry work as she did not know about it. Asked by the magistrate why, after seeing the schedule of hours, she did not stick to them, witness replied that she worked the hours she was told by defendant’s wife. Mr. Haggitt said the defence was a denial that overtime was worked and that the waitress was not employed in laundry work. No claim was made for overtime until two weeks after dismissal. Defendant stated that the schedule of hours was posted in the kitchen. Miss Raymond made no claim for overtime while in his employ and this was not made until two or three weeks after. She was never told to work overtime as all the work could be got through easily in schedule time. The housemaid-waitress was never asked to do laundry work. Cross-examined: He denied that instructions were given to start work at 6-20 a.m. The cases were dismised.
