STIFF HURDLE

OVER 400 TO MAKE NEW ZEALAND CRICKETERS DERBYSHIRE MATCH (By the Special Correspondent of the United Press Association.) DERBY, June 7. Derbyshire batted nearly all day when tne cricket match against New Zealand was continued to-day in overcast weather and on an excellent wicket. New Zealand's first innings score was taken from 151 for nine wickets to 163, and then Derbyshire made 327 for seven wickets before declaring its second innings closed. The tourists successfully appealed against the light without having to face the bowling and wilt start to-morrows play with all their wickets intact and with 403 runs to get to win. A thousand schoolboys, who were given a special holiday for the occasion, swelled the crowd to 3000.

Derbyshire completed its best sec-ond-innings score this season on the perfect wicket. The county was given a magnificent start by Smith and Aiderman. The former batted attractively, hitting a dozen 4’s and a 6. Aiderman was grave and gay in turn in compiling the second highest score of his lirst-ciass career. He stayed for nearly five hours, hitting ten 4's and three 6's.

The New Zealand bowlers stuck gamely to their difficult task, dismissing seven batsmen in three hours alter lunch. Cowie bowled with tons of energy but not an ounce of luck, several times shaving the stumps and being snicked past the fieldsmen. Dunning also bowled better than his final figures would suggest. Page was never scored from treely and Vivian captured a valuable wicket. Donnelly was inexpensive and effective after tea. Only during the first-wicket partnership did the bowling appear to be mastered. The fielding was unwavering and a brilliant catch was taken at first slip by Page. New Zealand, after a tiring day in the field, was left almost an hour to bat but bad light stopped play. Details:— New Zealand. First Innings. Kerr. lbw. h G.
