RAILWAY WORKERS
REPORTED UNREST SECOND DIVISION GRIEVANCES. I Per Press Association. T AUCKLAND, June 8. A feeling of uneasiness is reported among the Second Division railwaymen at the alleged failure of the department to honour its promise to remedy certain anomalies in the service conditions. The regrading of the First Division is now taking place, and the men consider that adjustments in their conditions should have been made before attention was given lo this matter. A conference of their representatives and the Hon. D. G. Sullivan and the departmental heads is stated to have proved unsuccessful, but. Mr. Sullivan has now agreed to a roundtable conference with the executive members of the Tradesmen’s Association, the Engine-drivers’, Firemen’s, and Cleaners’ Association, and the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants. The main grievances of the Second Division appear to be the difference in the annual and sick leave granted them as compared with the clerical branches, and the restricted opportunities for promotion to offices which are open to the First Division.
