COSTLY NEW WORKS AT AUCKLAND EXPENDITURE OF OVER A MILLION POUNDS I Per Press Association. J AUCKLAND, June 8. A programme of port development which includes three major wharf extension schemes estimated to cost £1,119,000 was decided upon by the Auckland Harbour Board at a special meeting, it is proposed to promote a private Bill to empower the board to Borrow £1,000,000 to enable the works to be undertaken as and when required. The schemes, which were outlined recently by the late chairman, Mr. C. G. Macindoe, provide lor construction of an export wharf and other essential works at a cost of x 183,000; special accommodation lor passenger and tourist vessels costing £275,000 and provision of deep-wat?r berthag? on the eastern waterfront by reclamation and construction of breastworks and quays at a cost of £432,000. As an outcome of the plan to build the export wharf from the eastern reclamation between the Vehicular Ferry Wharf and King’s Wharf, negotiations have been proceeding between the board and the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company, Ltd., for the leasing of part of the reclamation for the purpose of construction by the com•pany of a large dairy produce store equipped with up-to-date plant for handling and more efficient loading of butter and cheese. A report explaining the company’s need of more storage accommodation for butter and cheese and giving the cost of the export wharf and ocher necessary works, was submitted to the board by the superintendent and engineer, Mr. D. Holderness, and was adopted- The board authorised the works set out in the report and decided to apply to the Local Government Loans Board for its sanction to the raising of the necessary loan monies. It also granted to the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company the lease of an area of approximately 51 acres for a term of 21 years with perpetual right of renewal annum and £4500 for the remainder of for the same term, rental for the first two years of the lease to be £2250 per the 21 years.
