The above double programme will be shown this afternoon and evening. MARTON BOROUGH COUNCIL The Marton Borough Council met on Tuesday evening. The Mayor (Mr. F. Purnell* presided over Crs. G. B. | Gregory. A. Mclndoe, T. Barton, W. iB. Langston, A. J. B. Sicely, K. A. • Williams, and W. J. Mogridge and Mr. I C. C. McDonald (town clerk). Correspondence. Correspondence was dealt with as iollows: — Circular letter from the Municipal Association, relative to the allowance of costs relative to sales through the Registrar of the Supreme Court of property sold for overdue rates. —Received and filed for reference. Circular letter from t e PublicWorks Department, relative to the annual highway estimates for the year ending March 31, 1938. —Attended to. Circular letter from secretary Manawatu-Wairarapa Employers’ Association, with reference to the Municipal employees dispute, advising that a meeting of representatives from interested local bodies will be held at Palmerston North on June 10, to frame cour er proposals ami nominate assessors.—The council decided to ask that the Marton Borough Council be deleted as far as gas works claims were concerned. The town clerk was appointed to represent the council at the meeting. Application from R. Klitscher, for a 12 months’ renewal of the lease of the gravel reserve, Henderson’s Line, at a rental of £2O per annum.—Agreed to. With reference to the water supply to Mr. J. McGregor’s property at Upper Tutaenui, the matter was referred to the finance committee. At a special meeting of the council the rate levied for the year 1937-38 were agreed to and Crs. Mogridge and Gregory were appointed to sign the rate book. Gas Manager’s Report. Mr. A. J. Holden reported: “All plant is in good order and working well. The inlet valve has been fitted this month and the inlet syphon renewed. During the month 54 torts 3 cwts. of coal were carbonised yielding an average amount of coke for sale equal to 71 cwts. to the ton. During the month 6 new meters were used (three slots and three ordinary). During the month one cooker, one water heater, two gas fires and two gas heaters were fitted.” Overseer’s Report. Mr. W. R. Brant reported “During the past month the general maintenance work has been attended to. Drains have been cleaned out on Pukepapa and Wanganui Roads, and water tables cleared on several streets. The following streets have been ; patched with metal and rolled— Harris, Mill, Rira, Main, Henderson’s Line, Cubbabballa, Russell, Ngareta, Marumaru. Two water leaks have been repaired. Two water connections and one sewerage connection have been installed. The side of the footpath on Wellington Road adjacent to the old rubbish pit has been concreted. Building permits amounting to £1555 were isued. MARTON BRANCH W.D.F.U. A committee meeting of the Marton branch of the W.D.F.U. was held in the Marton Jockey Club's room, on Tuesday afternoon. Miss Taylor presided over a good attendance of members. Remits were discussed and variousaccounts passed for payment. A meeting of the General Committee will be held during the month of July. LADIES' HOCKEY. Owing to several of the local teams competing in the King's Birthday hockey tournament at Feilding to-mor-row, the ladies' hockey fixtures set down for play in Rangitikei have been postponed. These fixtures will be played next week. MARTON GOLF CLUB. The committee of the Marton Golf Club have decided to abandon the proposed tournament for June 9 (to-mor-row) on account of the wet state of the course. Names can be submitted to the captain for the team to play Wanganui at Belmont during next week-end. The team is limited to 20 and in the event of there being too many wishing to make the trip the team will be selected on handicap. The Canadian foursome, postponed last week, will be played this Saturday (June 12). RANGITIKEI RUGBY. In the third grade Rugby match at Hunterville on Saturday for the Hosking Cup, the Flock House trainees were unexpectedly defeated by Hunterville by 12 points to nil. The ground was very soggy. MOUNT VIEW SCHOOL JUBILEE. A meeting of the Jubilee Committee was held at Mount View School on Monday evening to finalise payments, etc., in connection with the School Jubilee recently held. Mr. F. R. H. Brice presided. A small surplus of money after paying all accounts in connection with the Jubilee gathering was donated to the school funds. A special vote of thanks was accorded to Mrs. A. A. Williams for making the official bouquet presented to the oldest lady pupil present, and to the Misses Meyer for identification tickets and decorated autograph book supplied. Mr. K. C. Mclntyre was also specially congratulated for the work he had executed in the capacity of secretary. The chairman took the opportunity to thank both ladies and gentlemen of the committee for the enthusiasm that they put into the project to make it the great success that it was—a Jubilee of “Jubilees.”
