DEFECT IN BRAKING
OPOHO TRAM FATALITY EXONERATION OF MOTORMAN. [ Per Press Association. ] DUNEDIN, June 7. The statement that an examination of tram No. 18, which was involved in a fatal accident at Opoho recently, and which last week developed a fault in the magnetic braking system, had disclosed a fault in the wiring connection with the brakes and that no blame for the accident could be attributed to anyone, was made by the chairman of the Tramways Committee. Mr. W. W. Batchelor, at a meeting of the City Council to-night. Gratification was expressed by councillors that the inspection of the car completely exonerated Motorman Chapman, who had been acquitted on a charge of manslaughter in connection with the Opoho tram fatality.
