SOCCER

WANGANUI ASSOCIATION SATURDAY’S MATCHES Dismal weather conditions ruled on Saturday afternoon and good football was out of the question. At Victoria Park, Athletic juniors beat Rangers junior team by three goals to one, and Marist juniors were the winners over Eastbrooke by two goals to nil. At Cook’s Gardens, Technical beat Technical Old Boys after a tough game by three goals to nil. For the senior game at Cook's Gardens the following teams were seen in action:— Thistle.—A. Kidd, S. Kidd, Conder, Mackie, Whiting, Tasker, Davis, Harrison, Good, and Healey. Athletic.—Barron, Cooper, Hansen, Raynor, Dear, J. Archibald, Thomson, Wilson, Wrigley, Archibald and Carter. Early in the game Thistle adapted themselves to the heavy going better than Athletic and at the finish ran out winners with the comfortable margin of three goals to nil. Several juniors were making their bow in senior football, Hansen in particular doing remarkably well, especially in his tussles with the speedy Mackie. The latter was again in great form and seemed to revel in the heavy going. His shooting with the heavy ball and his accurate centering were features of the game.

In view of the sodden nature of the ground it was decided to play only 30 minutes each way. Athletic kicked off and five minutes after the start, Mackie secured possession and outpacing Hansen and Cooper, scored an easy goal with a brilliant solo effort, tapping the ball into the net while travelling at top speed- Dear got his attacking line going, and Archibald, who played a great game ail through, beating tasker, tested Barron with a cross shot, but the latter fielded it brilliantly. With one man short, Athletic played the one back game' which was manfully carried out by Cooper.

Half-time found the score.—Thistle 1, Athletic 0.

Shortly after the resumption of play, a heavy hailstorm swept over, but with Spartan fortitude the players continued the game. Keeping up the pressure, Thistle were not to be denied and Tasker, trapping the trail neatly, scored with a clever shot that gave Barron no chance- Hansen had to leave the field owing to a leg injury Archibald came away on his own but his finishing shot was saved by Healey, though a corner had to be conceded.

Thistle made a determined onslaught on the Athletic citadel and from a melee scored a goal which appeared to come from S. Kidd. There was no more scoring.

The referee was Mr. F. Killeen.
