VANDALISM AT WELLINGTON PIECE CUT FROM PICTURE ART GALLERY SENSATION [ Per Press Association. 1 WELLINGTON, June 4. Some vandal yesterday afternoon at the Dominion Art Gallery cut a piece clean out of Harold Speed s oeautiful picture "May Morning,’ a tine oil painting 30 inches by 24 inches, depicting the semi-nude ugure of a girl sitting against a colourful background. The work was purchased in 1928 by the New Zealand Academy for £l5O, and was forming part of a collection presented by the Academy to the National Gallery. The piece cut is more or less circular, measuring nine inches by seven anu including the upper part of the torso. Whoever committed the vandalism took this piece away, as there is m sign of it. The picture is_ ruined.
