SOLAR EXPEDITION
LIFE ON THE ISLAND MENACE OF RAI'S AND CRABS SYDNEY, June 3. A radio message from the Solar Expedition last evening, stated that the officers of H.M.S. Wellington entertained the officers of the Avocet and members of the American and New Zealand expeditions. The quarter deck was dressed ~for the occasion, which furnt'sned an opportunity • to meet and exchange views. The coronagraph, jvith covers, breakwind, and . .darkroom, has been completed, the coelostat clock has been rated and is working well. The Thomsen meteorological observations hourly show only a few degrees range in temperature by day and night. While Mr. Buddle was blowing specimen eggs on the edge of a lagoon he was attacked by a tour-foot sea eel. He scrambled to safety. Specimens have been obtained of fierce land-crabs. There is an interested and large colony of spectacled tern near the camps. The Americans commenced eclipse drill. The New Zealanders start tomorrow. The men are unable to sleep owing to rats and hermit crabs on their beds. Some of the Americans are sleeping on the workshop roof.
