VISITING WANGANUI

LEADING SYDNEY TRAINER G. PRICE RENEWS ACQUAINTANCES Best-known throughout Australia and New Zealand as the trainer of the great Windbag. Melbourne Cup winner, Gold Rod, last season's sensational two-year-old, and a host of other winners on the other side of the Tasman during his 16 years’ residence in Australia, Mr. G. Price is revisiting New Zealand and arrived in Wanganui yesterday. He was soon busily engaged renewing acquaintances and at times the scene in the lounge at the Rutland Hotel bore a resemblance to a Buckingham Palace levee. During his visit to this portion of the Dominion Mr. Price will find time to renew acquaintance with veteran F. Tilley at Fordell, and the trip will scarcely be considered complete without a run out to Mr. G. M. Currie's Koatanui Stud and Mr. M. Grogan's newly-established Grange Stud. He will also be at the Wanganui races today, where a brother, Mr. W. Price, is the well-known starter.

Formerly engaged in training at Awapuni, Mr. G. Price paid a brief visit to Palmerston North on Thursday from Hastings, the primary purpose being to make arrangements for the shipment to Australia of the Beau Pare —Helen colt. The Squire, who has been receiving his early education at the hands of Mrs. A. W. McDonald at Awapuni, since his purchase on behalf of Mr. E. J. Watt (Sydney) for 1050gns. at the Westmere stud dispersal sale. Arriving in Auckland lasi week, Mr. Price, who is recuperating from a severe illness, went to Hastings, where he made arrangements for the shipment on Thursday next, when he leaves for Australia, of Dr. N. Smith's Limond —Anklet colt, who was purchased at the Trentham yearling sales and is to enter the stable of P. Naiion at Sydney. Accompanying this horse across the Tasman will be The Squire and Haut Monde, Mr. T. H. Lowry's brilliant but unlucky four-year-old colt by Lord Quex from D’Oro. Haut Monde, who ran second in the principal event on each day of the Manawatu Racing Club's autumn meeting, has been entered for the Esom Handicap, of £2600, to be run on October 2; the Metropolitan Handicap, of £5OOO, to be run on October 4; the Toorak Handicap, of £lOOO, to be run on October 9; the Caulfield Cup, of £6500, to be run on October 16; the Cantala Stakes, of £2500, to be run on October 30; and the Melbourne Cup, of £lO,200, to be run on November 2.

After visiting the Wanganui races, Price will proceed to Wellington, where he will await .the arrival on Wednesday, of three brood mares. Visage and the Heroic mare Cereza, the latter a recent winner, and both fresh from racing, will be mated in Hawke's Bay. The third mare is Treasure Trove. They are owned by Mr. E. J. Watt, of Sydney. Prominent among Price’s string of 25 horses in training at Sydney are Egmont, who is to contest the next Melbourne Cup; Gold Rod, who is being prepared for spring w.f.a. engagements, Grand Boy, Troy and Nightingale. Including The Squire, whom he is taking across to Australia, Price will have in commission 10 yearlings. They are Mildura (Manfred—Miss Meadow), Peckmore (Veilmond— Peka), Lizette (Doric—Louise), Pin Money, Chivalrous—Parsimony), Pandaua (Brazen—Ring Again), Lakshmi (The Buzzard Lady Fuglebury), Adios (Excitement—Tinkledell), Molten Gold (Rosewing—Linlass), named after a Coronation cocktail, and Homeric (Iliad—Quadrilateral), bred at the Ellerslie stud and sold as a yearling in Australia for 1800gns.
