RUGBY FOOTBALL PIRATES BEAT HAUTAPU Pirates and Hautapu, rivals of old, met on No. 2 ground on Saturday, when a hard-fought game ended in a victory for the blacks by 11 points to 8. Pirates undoubtedly had the better of the first spell and led by eight points to nil at the interval, but Hautapu scored twice in the second half, whereas Pirates added three points to Iheir tally by means of a penalty goal from a handy position. Pirates scored only one try during the match as against two registered by Hautapu, but Hagen’s kicking played a big part in Pirates’ victory, though the blacks were lucky on one occasion to be awarded a free kick right in front of the goal. Territorially the advantage lay with Pirates and for this reason nobody will begrudge them their victory even though they scored a try less than their rivals. Play was keen throughout rather than spectacular and the fact that the issue was always in doubt kept the supporters of the two sides on tenterhooks. The teams lined out as follow: — Pirates (black).—Dick. R. Johnston, McGonagle, Graham. North. Hagen, N. Woodhead, Bagley, D. Derbidp.e, Thurston. Sisson, Lee, Tasker, Jackson, Johnson.

Hautapu (blue and black). —P. Healey, Ross, Moore. Keats, McLennan, Forbes, Findlay. Thurston, Healey, Thompson, O’Brien. Gregory, McKee, E. Sisson. Nicholson. The game had hardly begun when Hautapu were awarded a free kick in a handy position, but Ross’ shot at goal was smothered. Things looked black for Hautapu when Derbidge exploited tho short punt in the blue and blacks’ twenty-five and followed up fast, but was unable to touch down before the ball became “dead ” A loose forward rush on the part of Hautapu culminated in O’Brien and Sisson dribbling over the line, but North beat them for the touchdown when a try seemed imminent. Findlay sent his backs away in a spectacular passing rush that gained much ground. Findlay. McLennan, Forbes. Moore, and Ross all figured in the movement. Pirates retaliated. Woodhead, Hagen, and North handling in turn, but the attack broke down when North’s pass to McGonagle went astray and a golden opportunity to score was lost. McLennan and Nicholson figured prominently [n a strong attack on the part of Hautapu. but the latter’s pass Io Keats on the wing was forward. The first try of the match was scored a few minutes later when Graham broke away and then passed to McGonagle, who crossed near the corner and ran right round behind the posts. Hagen had no difficulty in converting. —P. : rates 5. Hautapu 0. Encouraged by their success. Pirates set up a strong attack, and Hautapu infringed in their anxiety to keep the invaders out. Hagen’s kick hit the cross-bar and rebounded infield much to the chagrin of Pirates’ supporters. The blacks returned to the attack and were rewarded by a free kick right in front of the goal. Hagen made no mistake and sent the ball over the centre of the cross-bar. —Pirates 8, Hautapu 0.

Just before the close of the first, spell, McGonagle tried a “pot,” but the ball failed to rise. Half-time sounded with Pirates still eight points in the lead.

-Hautapu opened the second spell with a concerted forward rush that carried play dangerously near the Pirates’ line, where a scrum was ordered. From a melee following the scrum, Wally Thompson gained possession and scored a well-deserved try. Ross failed with the kick.

A short punt by North found a gap in the defence and McGonagle and Graham followed up fast, but were beaten by the bounce of the ball. Hautapu staged a loose forward rush that culminated in Nicholson scoring a try. which Ross converted to equalise the scores,—Pirates 8. Hautapu 8. Jackson. McGonagle, North and E. Thurston were responsible for some good work at this stage. A free kick to Pirates saw Hagen place his team three points in the lead.—Pirates 11, Hautapu 8.

Hautapu were pressing hard when time was called with the scores unchanged. Mr F. Darvill was referee. Junior Matches Junior matches resulted as under:— Utiku 16, beat Huia 0. For the winners, Pineha scored a try and potted a goal. Galvin, Tall and O’Dea also scored tries. Hautapu beat Pirates, 8-3.
