JUDGE’S COMMENT
"DREADFUL THING” CAUSTIC SODA CASE PUNISHMENT IMPOSED [ Per Press Association. ) PALMERSTON N., May 3. “I cannot pass over a case of this kind without imposing punishment,” stated Mr Justice Reed in the Supreme Court when a married woman, Amy Louisa Graham, appeared for sentence, having pleaded guilty to a charge of attempting to injure a neighbour’s baby by placing caustic soda in the baby’s milk. Counsel for accused pleaded for probation on the grounds that accused never intended that the child should be injured, and the state of her mind at the time.
His Honour: “I can’t accept for one instant that a person in the habit of using caustic would not appreciate the dreadful thing it would be for a child to get the poison in its mouth. The child might have died or have been injured for life.” Accused was ordered to be detained for fifteen months for reformative purposes.
