TAIHAPE

THE MAJESTIC. "THE LONELY ROAD.” Lovers of romance staged in a background of thrills and adventure will note with enthusiasm the forth coming presentation of "Lonely Road” at the Majestic on Saturday. Clive Brook and Victoria Hopper are costarred for the first time in this Neville Shute story directed by Jame* Flood. The former has the role of an ex-naval officer, now a Secret Service man, while Victoria Hopper plays the part of a dance hall hostess. If the I latter had not been so attractive and *if her brother had never driven a lorry full of contraband there might not have been so delightful a story. The young lorry-man, innocent tool of gun-runners, has to be got out of trouble and it is Clive Brook who saves him after terrific near-to-death adventures in which Victoria Hopper shares. Thus the twisted plot which so puzzles Scotland Yard is eventually solved with Cupid pointing the way. SCHOOL AFFAIRS HEADMASTER’S REPOR 1? The headmaster of the Taihape Dis trict High School (Mr J. C. Wmbleyi presented the following report at Monday’s meeting of the i’ainape School Committee: The present primary roll is 406, and this number should entitle the school to an additional assistant, who would be placed in the infant department. Our annual swimming sports were held on Monday, March 13, and passed off successfully. Mr Wimseti had charge of arrangements, and he was ably assisted by other members of the staff, and by Mr Bo water and Mr Hayes. On Wednesday next the annual cricket and tennis matches will be played with Ohakune High School at Ohakune. An additional cupboard is urgently required for the infant school. I wish to draw your attention to the fact that no kindling wood has yet arrived. The earlier it comes the better chance it has of drying before the winter. Supplies of firewood and coal are also required. I suggest May 6 as the date for the annual school ball, and would be glad of any suggestions that would make for the better running of it. Miss Applegarth and Mr Morton finish this month their term as manual instructors. Their places will be taken by Miss Campbell and Mr Dredge, both of Palmerston North. In future Taihape will be their headquarters. They will spend three days here instead of two, and two in Marton. The report was adopted.

The headmaster informed the meeting that the Wanganui Education Board had applied for an additional assistant for the infant department of the Taihape School. School Ball.—Dr. Hay moved that the school ball be held on May 6, as suggested by the headmaster. The motion w as carried.

The question of holding a school ball for children only was discussed at some length. Mr Loader moved a motion to this effect. Mr Sherson seconded the motion. During the discussion it was suggested that a dance be held later for adults only in aid of the school funds. Mr Haydon moved an amendment that the school ball be held on the same lines as previously, and that a charge of Is be made in respect of High School pupils. The amendment was seconded by Mr Jurgens and carried. The price of admission for primary school children will be sixpence as in the past. A deputation consisting of the headmaster, the secretary, and Dr. Hay was appointed to wait on the Borough Council, urging that the Huia Street footpath in front of the school should be concreted. A letter was received from the Railway Department stating that it was unable to provide better train facilities for children from Ohingaiti and Mangaweka attending the Taihape High School, and pointing out that the suggestion that a carriage should be attached to the goods train arriving in Taihape about 10 a.m., was impracticable, as the train was very irregular and often did not run. Its average recently was seven trips a month. The letter was received.
