FOX RECAPTURED
POLICE SURROUND HIM AT WOODVILLE TAKEN COMPLETELY BY SURPRISE SPENT A NIGHT IN TURAKINA I Per Press Association. I PALMERSTON N.» March 10. The hunt for Wiliam Joseph Fox, who escaped sensationally from a train at Stratford on Monday night while being escorted to prison, ended at Woodville late this afternoon, his re-arrest being effected by a party of Palmerston North and Feilding police under Inspector J. Cummings, in charge of the Palmerston North district. The wanted man was taken completely by surprise, and submitted without any demonstration. Since Fox’s escape was first notified both the Palmerston North and Feilding police have been keeping a strict vigil on all main entrances to the district. The first intimation that a man of his description was in the vicinity was secured by Sergeant Angland. Feilding, and as a result the search was intensified, as many as 16 members of the police force being detailed for this special duty. The next news of Fox came from Woodville, for which place Inspector Cummings set out immediately, accompanied by Sergeant Angland, Constable Turnbull and Johnston (Feilding) and Chapman and Bowley (Palmerston North), and Detectives Power and Compton (Palmerston North). At Woodville they were joined by Constable Skinner.
Smart team work was responsible for Fox being located at a house situated in a hollow. This place the police surrounded. Inspector Cummings and the two detectives entered the building and found the wanted man in the kitchen, where he submitted to arrest. Fox was then brought back to Palmerston North and placed safely under lock and key again. He will appear before the Court again to-morrow and will probably be remanded to appear at New Plymouth. It appears that, after his escape at Stratford, Fox remained there on Monday night and set out southwards the next morning. In the Afternoon he took shelter and on Tuesday arrived in the vicinity of Turakina, where he stopped for that night. He came on to Feilding to-day and got as far as Woodville late in the afternoon. Passing motorists gave him short lifts here and there on the way down the coast.
