The New York Times, in a leader drawing a parallel between the Australian referenda and the United States constitutional crisis, comments: "The referenda very clearly shows that in at least one democracy where voters had a direct chance to express their opinion, they refused to vote extensions of Federal power. It was not the Supreme Court of Australia or a mere group of ‘defeatist lawyers," but the people themselves who prevented the Federal Government increasing its control."
