WANGANUI TENNIS TEAM

Sir, —I would like to register my emphatic protest against the action of N. B. Barkman, selector of the Wanganui Tennis Association, in his choice of a team to represent this province against Hawke’s Bay next week-end. With such players as M. L. Lampe, T. Latham, N. Hay Campbell, V. Latham and L. Smaller playing, there is no need to select such young and inexperienced performers as Gowan, Foster and Rowntree, and why ask the local professional, A. M. Campbell, to watch the team? The older players are superior, certainly in doubles, and as two doubles are played against one single, surely their presence in the team is necessary. Lampe beat Rountree during the week-end and so did K. Craig in an inter-club match on Saturday; so why is he selected? Lampe and Smaller rank next to Cox and Udy. Why omit them ? It is grossly unfair and I hope all players agree with me. As far as the coaching goes, why do they need it? Will a week's play make a difference to them even if against a professional although I will admit Mr. Campbel will beat them as his stroke equipment is too good for them. Pick the best team, Mr. Editor, and let young players earn their right to selection.—l am, etc., "FAIR PLAY."
