WEATHER FORECAST

Meteorological Office, Wellington, Friday, January 8, 4 p.m. General Situation. —An anti-cyclone of slight intensity still extends across northern New Zealand, but a fresh and rather deep depression is advancing over the Tasman Sea. Forecast. Winds: Southerly at first over the Auckland peninsula; otherwise, westerly to northerly prevailing, light to moderate generally, but freshening and later reaching gale force at places about and south of Cook Strait. A southerly change setting in by to-morrow morning over the southern half of the South Island and extending over most of the Dominion within the next 24 to 36 hours. Seas (N.Z. waters): Slight to moderate, but rising south of Cape Egmont and in the Cook and Foveaux Straits areas. Eastern Tasman Sea: Light to variable winds at first in the northern portion, otherwise freshening, northerlies prevailing backing to westerlies and later to southerlies; seas, slight to moderate but becoming rough in the central and southern portions. Weather: Fair at first in most districts soon clouding over, however, in the western and southern portions of the South Island, with rain developing and unsettled conditions extending over most of the Dominion during the week-end, temperatures becoming temporarily warmer. • Time of sunset to-day:—7.s7 p.m. Time of sunrise to-morrow:-4.59 a.m. Phases of the Moon for January.—Third quarter, January 5; new moon, January 13; first quarter, January 20; full moon, January 27.
