STEAMER SALVAGED

; TOW OF 1200 MILES. I PLIGHT OF GREEK VESSEL. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 5. I A story of salvage carried out in i response to a wireless message from i a Geek steamer was brought by the JPensilva, which reached Lyttelton ' from Ocean Island last week. It is Istated that the amount to be awarded for the salvage undertaken by the Pensila will run into a big ligure, and a substantial proportion of it will be paid to the officers and crew, every man on board, from the master to the galley-boy, receiving a share. The salvage occurred on August 31, while the Pensilva was bound from Jacksonville, Florida, to Japan with a cargo of scrap iron. A wireless message was received from the Greek steamer Aliios, about 6000 tons, bound from Boston to Japan, also with scrap iron, asking for towage assistance. Turning back on her course, the Pensilva steamed 400 miles, and on September 2 took the Aliios in tow for San Francisco, 1200 miles away. The Greek steamer had been disabled through smashing her rudder [and carrying away her stern-post. Fortunately moderate to fine weather was encountered, and, except for the tow-line carrying away four limes, the long tow was accomplished without incident in 10 days.
