STOREMEN AND PACKERS

RATES OF PXY WELLINGTON, Dec. 12. A claim by the Storemens and Packers’ Union that youths should be paid adult, rates upon attaining 21 years of age, whether they have served two years or not, was upheld by the Arbitration Court after the question had been submitted by the Inspector of Awards. The award states that youths starting between 19 and 20 shall be paid £1 10s during the first year and £2 for the second year, with adult rates thereafter, and the employers contended that they were required to pay £2 a week only until the second year was completed. Another clause says storemen and packers over 21 shall be paid adult rates, and the Court held that this clause governed the other and decided that adult rates had 10 he paid soon as the worker was 21.
