BRITAIN AND EGYPT

THE TREATY RATIFIED DEBATE IN LORDS SUPPORT OF ALL PARTIES RUGBY, Nov. 25. The motion for the ratification of the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty was debated to-night in the House of Lords. Lord Plymouth, in moving the motion for ratification, said that he honestly believed that if the Treaty was implemented in the spirit in which it was negotiated he foresaw an era of prosperity and fruitful cooperation between Britain and the Egyptian people. Reviewing the principal provisions of the Treaty, he remarked that the British Government must support the Egyptian Government in defending Egypt from invasion. Egypt did not undertake to send Egyptian troops outside oi Egypt to protect British territory. That, was more than could be asked ot Egypt at present. The leaders of the Opposition parties warmly supported the motion. Lord Snell (Labour) said that it was worthy of note that at the time of the repression ot liberties throughout the world England should choose this moment to seal a treaty of selfgovernment, and he hoped that their principles of democratic freedom would be justified by results. Lord Lloyd criticised certain details of the military clauses, but on the whole welcomed them cordially. He believed that Egypt would be an honourable and faithful ally. The motion was carried without a division.
