• AUCKLAND CENTRE REJECTS AMERICAN PROJECT ! AUSTRALIANS TO COME OVER Mr. T. C. Hobbs-Jones presided at Monday night’s full meeting of delegates to the Auckland Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, when it was decided not to proceed with a scheme for the organisation of a tour in New Zealand by American, Canadian and Australian swimmers, at a cost of £<B4o. Instead the centre will arrange a I tour by the Australian woman champion, Evelyn de Lacey, of Perth, and an Australian male champion. The combined scheme, together with recommendations for separate visits by American, Canadian an 1 Australian teams, was detailed in a report submitted to the previous meeting of the centre, and referred to the affiliated clubs, with a request that they should state whether they would support the proposal financial-!' ly. The only clubs reporting them- • selves to last night’s meeting as favouring the scheme were Eastern Suburbs, Parnell, Otahuhu, and Whan- , garie. The rest considered the scheme I too ambitious, but expressed approval \ of a visit by Miss de Lacey and an | ? Australian male swimmer. j The secretary of the Amateur Swimming Union of Australia stated 1 that Miss de Lacey was agreeable to 1 come to New Zealand. He suggested j S that arrangements should be made for t her to visit Auckland directly after L yie Australian championship meeting, c which would be held in Brisbane at < the end of January next. He also t expressed the union’s willingness to f select a suitable male swimmer after 1 the Australian titles had been con- f tested. J Members of the centre agreed that only the holder of an Australian championship would be desired.
